And so very jealous. My niece, but not my rifle:

Yes, you can tell from the grin that the Evil Gun Rays have already started to rot her brain. Woo hoo!
My understanding is that she’s fired this thing. I am, may I say, insanely jealous. The Evil Gun Rays are rotting my brain from the picture alone.
By the way, Mom, no, that is not an AK-47.
[AK-47 Picture and discussion below fold.]
The AK-47 is a true assault rifle–a relatively short, light weapon meant to be fired while running towards the enemy. (Overall length: ~34 inches.)
That beast Larz is brandishing is neither short nor light. It’s meant to be fired from a fixed position.

[...] This young lady is considering enlisting in either the Navy or the Marines. (The Air Force, apparently, has ugly uniforms, and is Right Out.) [...]
Hey. Thought i’d give you a heads up in regards to the rifle your niece is handling. That’s an HK G3, in its simplest designation and it’s been the portuguese army’s main weapon for about 40 years now. It fires basically the same caliber as the AK-47 and can be fired from various positions. Very reliable weapon, though a bit heavy. Kicks like a mule when fired, and if improperly shouldered can cause serious pain and injury, as many a recruit rapidly learns. And that rifle can be fired while running toward the enemy… so long as it’s not in full auto mode. ahaha
Cheers
Jay, thanks for the info.
That’s another nagging splinter of ignorance tweezered from my brain.
Hello there, thought I’d comment on the gun a bit more.
1st of all, never realized the rifle is so big. Well, I guess it is. As mentioned it’s a G3, a post-WW2 German design. Same thing MP5 submachine gun is based on. Regarding the caliber… diameter is the same but not the ammo. It fires 7.62×51 – .308 Win that is. Kalashnikovs fire 7.62×39. Much smaller. G3 is… like M14 (a bit smaller though). With the scope and a full magazine you should be looking at a 12 lbs rifle I think. Norwegians I think got very good with the full-auto firing of the thing, able to keep it on target despite the recoil.
That’s a Kalash in the background I guess? Sound basic design – can strip the rifle and reassemble it in around 25 seconds, seen it done in 17. I’m a Finnish reservist so the thing is very familiar for me. Fairly handy and quite accurate, too, and can endure quite a lot.
Nice rifle, nice post and a beautiful niece!
